Yes, really.
Costume Prep
Yesterday I went into a big sporting goods store to acquire some last-minute costume accessories. I picked up a headband and wristbands before heading to the checkstand being manned by a girl my age.
“Halloween costume?” she said as I walked up. What? Because I’m not athletic-looking enough to actually need these things for any sort of physical activity?
“Yep,” I said.
“Who are you being?”
“Richie Tenenbaum,” I said, thinking that I would certainly get a bright smile of recognition, at least.
“Huh.”
“He’s a character in a really great movie. Um. Called ‘The Royal Tenenbaums.’”
Unabashedly she noted that she’d never heard of it and preceded to relate a story: “Lotsa people are in here buying movie character costumes. This one guy was buying stuff for a hunter costume. It’s, I guess, a Johnny Depp movie, but I didn’t know it.”
I knew immediately that she meant Hunter S. Thompson and Fear and Loathing. I turned to the guy behind me in line and he gave a knowing glance. Huh.
